From Durban, the Yaksha Curry?
Durban curry is an iconic dish in South African cuisine, particularly in the city of Durban, known for its large Indian community. It is often enjoyed with rice or rotis, a type of flatbread, but can also be served in a "bunny chow," a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with curry. This method of serving curry is very popular in South Africa and offers a unique culinary experience. The choice between rice, roti, or bunny chow depends on personal preferences and local traditions. Traditionally made with chicken or lamb, Durban curry is also enjoyed with shrimp, a popular option that reflects Durban's coastal location and thriving fishing industry. This spice blend is a tribute to Durban's diversity and cultural richness, transporting each diner to the heart of South Africa.

Origin
Sourced from single farms
The spices used in this creation come from unique farms, primarily from southwestern Sri Lanka to northwestern India. Grown sustainably, the cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and pepper hail from southern India, while cumin, coriander, and fenugreek are sourced from northern India. Pepe’s paprika, which adds a reddish hue, enriches this spice blend with a distinctive visual and flavourful touch. Each spice is carefully selected to compose a harmonious and balanced blend that faithfully reflects the authentic flavour of Durban cuisine.
About the farmers
During our travels across Sri Lanka, India, and Spain in search of exceptional spices, we encountered producers practising agriculture that is respectful of nature. Each of these “terroir heroes” cultivates their spices using traditional and sustainable methods, ensuring the preservation of biodiversity and soil fertility. In India and Sri Lanka, the producers prepare their own fertiliser (jiwamrita) from the dung of their farm cows and the organic waste they generate, promoting a natural and balanced cycle. In Spain, Pepe adopts innovative practices to combat water scarcity, such as reusing wastewater for irrigation and employing more water-efficient irrigation systems like drip irrigation.
